SporeLog privacy policy

SporeLog keeps your grow records on your phone. There are two editions: the download from this site, which has no ads, and the Google Play edition (coming later), which shows ads from Google.

What we collect

Nothing. SporeLog has no account, and no analytics or crash reporting of its own. We never see your records, and they're never sent anywhere.

The edition downloaded from this site has no ads and doesn't use the internet at all.

Android's own Google Drive backup leaves SporeLog's records out. When you set up a new phone by cable or Wi-Fi on Android 12 or newer, your records can come across with the app. To move them any other way, make a backup in SporeLog's Settings.

Ads in the Google Play edition

The Google Play edition shows banner ads from Google AdMob. A one-off purchase removes them.

  • With your consent, the ads can be personalised: Google may choose them from your interests and activity in other apps and sites.
  • To show and measure ads and stop ad fraud, Google's ad code collects some information about your phone: things like the advertising ID, your IP address (which gives a rough location) and how you interact with the ads. On newer Android versions it can also use Android's own ad features (Privacy Sandbox: ad topics and ad measurement). It never gets your records.
  • Where the law requires it, for example in the European Economic Area and the UK, SporeLog asks for your consent first, and you can change your choice in Settings > Privacy options. Elsewhere, that option opens your phone's ad settings, where you can reset or delete your advertising ID.

How Google uses this information: policies.google.com. After you remove ads, the ad code doesn't run from the next time you open the app.

Purchases

"Remove ads" is a one-off purchase made through Google Play. Google handles the payment, and we never see your payment details. SporeLog only asks Google Play whether you've bought it.

What stays on your phone

  • Your records: species, strains, items, notes and reminders, in the app's own database.
  • Your settings, plus a few safety copies the app makes before a restore or an update, so nothing is lost if one goes wrong.

The database isn't encrypted, so it's protected by your phone's own lock, like most apps' data.

What SporeLog asks for

  • Internet and network status, in the Google Play edition only, to show ads and check your purchase with Google Play.
  • Google Play billing and the advertising ID (including Android's ad topics and measurement permissions), in the Google Play edition only, for the purchase and the ads. Google's ad code also asks to run short background tasks.
  • Notifications, for the reminders you set.
  • Start at boot, so your reminders are set again after the phone restarts.
  • Storage, on Android 9 and older only, to save a family tree as a picture.

Files you make

Backups, CSV exports, shared strains, family-tree pictures and printed reports leave the app only when you make them, and go only where you choose to save or send them.

Android's own backup

If your phone backs up app data to your Google account, Android may include SporeLog's records in that backup. That backup is run by Android and Google, not by us, and you can turn it off in your phone's settings.

Children

SporeLog isn't made for children, and we don't knowingly collect information from anyone.

Changes

If a later version changes any of this, we'll update this page and its date before that version comes out.
